HYPERTRIGLYCERIDEMIA

DEFINITION: Hypertriglyceridemia (high fasting plasma triglycerides) is a
condition that occurs typically in two forms.
It occurs when any calories over and above the body’s requirements are turned
into triglycerides and cholesterol, so when overeating occurs, triglyceride
counts begin to increase. This condition is more prevalent in men than women
and is exacerbated by uncontrolled diabetes mellitus, obesity and lack of
exercise.
Lipid disorders occur when there is an excess of fatty substances in the blood.
Lipid disorders increase the likelihood of Atherosclerosis and heart disease.
• Low-density lipoproteins (LDL) -- bad cholesterol
• High-density lipoproteins (HDL) -- good cholesterol
Familial hypertriglyceridemia is a common inherited disorder in which the concentration of very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL) is elevated in the plasma. This leads to increased risk of heart disease, obesity, and pancreatitis. This disorder is caused by a gene mutation, which can be passed on from one or both parents. Women with elevated triglycerides before conception may develop severe hypertriglyceridemia with triglycerides well above 1000 mg/dL. Most of the medications used to treat hypertriglyceridemia are contraindicated during pregnancy The most common causes of acquired high triglycerides in women is from: Taking medical drugs such as Evista and Tamoxifen (exogenous oestrogens or Selective Oestrogen Receptor Modulators- SERMS), or pregnancy, when superimposed on familial (inherited) hypertriglyceridemia increase the production of triglycerides from the liver, and decrease the clearance of triglycerides from the blood.
